Macael white marble, also called "white gold" has been used since at least 2,700 BC.
We find famous structures composed with this marble.
The Roman theater of Mérida, inaugurated around 15 BC, has its columns and part of these structures built with this marble.
The Alhambra Palace has its columns which were sculpted in this marble in the 14th century.
This courtyard of the lions also had its fountain sculpted in this same marble.
The mortars
Macael white marble mortars are commonly used in the kitchen and previously by apothecaries.
Our supplier is Andrés Muro from Artesanías Muro.
Artesanía Muro is the first Spanish company to recover, after decades, the manufacture of marble mortars. Being even the only manufacturers for several decades.
Marble mortars of exceptional quality, unique finish and unequaled elegance.
More than 55 years of constant development and strict specialization have allowed great national and international chefs, such as those of television: Karlos Arguiñano, Bruno Oteiza, Alberto Chicote or Enrique Sánchez, to use our mortars on television and in other media for their purity, quality and hygiene.
Since 1970, Artesanía Muro has been handcrafting these iconic mortars, previously made by hand without electricity. Currently they are made with all kinds of systems and tools designed by Andrés Muro.
A few decades ago, marble mortar was abandoned, as it was impossible to maintain a product that had lost its profitability due to the time and labor required to manufacture it by hand (pointer and chisel). It was at this point that Andrés Muro took the first step and began an industrialized process, automating processes and developing new manufacturing techniques.
The industry changed, electricity arrived, and with the little machinery that existed at that time, he devised his own systems, mechanisms and tools to be able to manufacture his mortars profitably and thus maintain this jewel of a product for all this time. . .
He designed, created and standardized his own Macael mortars with his specific measures and with a unique style, a trademark. "Today, when someone sees his mortars anywhere, he knows it's an Artesanía Muro mortar."
WARNING: Online sales sites misuse Andrés Muro's photos. Only selling fake replicas.
We are today the only ones in Switzerland to import these white marble mortars from Macael
